In the past few years, a new trend starts to emerge in the academic world in China. There has been a growing popularity of postgraduates being recruited back into universities or institutes. This new trend is caused by various reasons. This essay will investigate this trend from an employee’s perspective and hence conclude on how international companies can improve to attract these top talents.

To understand the root of this trend, it is crucial to understand why this trend started to emerge these few years rather than earlier.  To begin with, the market had changed. After years of development since the Reform and Opening-up Policy started in the 90s. With over 40 years of steady development, the Chinese Government can invest far more resources than before. From 2016 to 2020, over 16,000 billion Chinese Yuan were invested in the public education sector. It is a great leap compared to 13 billion in 1979. With such higher investment, Universities and Institutes were able to attract more postgraduates with the promises of more research funds, better benefits, and higher incomes.

In the past, these were used to be the most persuasive reasons for postgraduates to enter an international company. However, due to the larger investment in education from the Chinese Government, the gap is now shrinking between international companies and local Universities and Institutes. Moreover, since in private sectors, the pressure of having a financial return is certainly bigger than those in the public sectors. Some postgraduates might even prefer to enter the universities or institutes due to less pressure.

In conclusion, the trend of more and more postgraduates being recruited back into universities or institutes in China was caused by the improvement of the academic environment, thanks to the larger investments of the Chinese Government on Education. For international companies, to continue maintain a competitive attraction towards these top talents, better income, or a better research environment such as less bureaucracy in the system will still be a good characteristic to develop.
